I used to think 'build it and they will come' was a real strategy. It's not. It took me a few failed projects to realize that marketing is just as important as the code itself. I've started approaching marketing like a coding problem: I test different messages, look at the data (simple Google Analytics stuff), and iterate. I've found that being transparent and sharing the 'behind-the-scenes' of my build process on social media is the best way to build a community. It's not about being 'salesy';
