Why isn't taxation theft?
Most people feel this question is inherently subversive. Taxes are natural. They keep society running.
Libertarianism asks differently. If an individual forces money from someone without consent, it's a crime. Why does the same act become legitimate when a government does it?
Bastiat called it \"legal plunder.\" He refused to accept the distinction between what is criminal for individuals and what is policy for states.
The starting point of libertarianism is simple. Every person owns themselves. Coercion without consent cannot be justified — no matter how noble the stated purpose.
