Wall Street Giants Meet with SEC to Discuss DeFi and Tokenized Securities Concerns

Representatives from major Wall Street firms, including JPMorgan Chase, Citadel, and the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFA), held a meeting with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) crypto working group on Tuesday. The discussions focused on significant concerns arising from the regulatory body's evolving stance on digital assets.

The meeting highlighted apprehension regarding the SEC's potential plans to grant exemptions for tokenized securities. Participants expressed worries that such a move could negatively impact the broader U.S. economy. Furthermore, there were expressed reservations about the SEC's intention to exclude certain Decentralized Finance (DeFi) projects from existing securities law compliance obligations.

SIFA emphasized in its meeting materials that regulatory treatment should be determined by an asset's economic characteristics, rather than its technical label or classification. The trade association warned that broad exemptions for tokenized trading activities could undermine investor protections and lead to market instability, citing the crypto market flash crash in October 2025 as a potential illustration of such risks.
