I had a 2 hour phone conversation with a childhood friend today. He's in product development at a newish social media platform that aims to improve upon reddit.

He's been involved in the tech space his whole career and jumped ship from a big SF based dotcom back in 2021. He got into NFTs, shitcoin mining, and ordinals... the conversation started down a path about bitcoin only and cold storage... not wanting to talk about bitcoin, I asked about his company and how it compares to something like Nostr. He then went on to describe all of the things that a a user might want to use nostr for except that his platform is going to \"make it easy\" for people and have custodial crypto wallets, avoiding cryptographic key pairs and provide a better UX. Then he said he didn't know much about nostr and only messed with it for a few minutes in late 2022 when I told him about it. He didn't like it, so he stopped using it immediately.


He said they have 33,000 DAUs and 150,000 on a waiting list... but they don't have ANY form of monetization and no plans other than ads one day.

I can't believe someone can touch the stove so many times and not be completely rekt. Nor can I believe that someone so intelligent can ignore nostr knowing that he's working for a company trying to solve many of the challenges that have been solved on nostr already. He knows very little about what is possible. Will these people have epiphanies one day? Or will they stay completely asleep at the wheel?
