Identity is a concept as old as humanity itself. Since the first human groups began to organize, there arose the need to distinguish one from another, recognize kinship, define belonging, and establish responsibilities. Identity is, at its core, the answer to the question “who am I?” within a community.
With the expansion of the internet and the digitalization of daily life, the need arose to transfer that validation into the digital environment.
There are two approaches to administering digital identity: centralized and decentralized.
The dilemma is not whether there will be a digital identity, but who will control it.
If it remains in the hands of governments and corporations, society could slide into a centralized control model, with less freedom and more constraints.
If decentralization is chosen, even with its challenges, there is the possibility of preserving individual autonomy.
