The 2010 bitcoin talk threads seem pretty clear to me, Satoshi was ok with small timestamp sized hashes as non monetary data— via comments on bitdns, he seems to support the possibility of other chains connecting to bitcoin via that small hash. This and his comments about initially agreeing to whitelist monetary transactions over arbitrary data that could be attack vectors make his view really quite plain.
I’d prefer to follow his initial view— build other stuff on another chain, let it fill a small hash on bitcoin if necessary (or perhaps have an entirely different chain, though that’s more speculation on my party versus my read of his comments). Makes sense!
For the foreseeable future I won’t be participating in large data, non monetary use of bitcoin— unless the market overwhelmingly begins to and it is proven to not impact significantly the monetary use case GM
