Developing something out of nothing is exciting, addictive and gives such a dopamine hit. Especially when only a few can figure out how to build one — or so I thought.
As a former programmer, I used to think I was special, part of the cool kids: techy people versus non-techy. I felt superior.
That came crashing down when I realised none of it mattered. Everything goes back to dust. My creation will last only as long as its purpose.
But what truly matters is how I make others feel. This hit me hard.
I can say I am grateful I managed to experience employment at one of the Big Four. But I also realised it was a cut-throat environment where the lines around your values were so blurred. I cannot live a life where a human is another number in a spreadsheet. You contribute to the bottom line at the expense of your well-being or you are out!
It does not matter how brilliant your creation is; what matters is \"how you make other people feel\". You hold so much superiority because of your talent without realising that it is a privilege handed to you by the \"creator\".
The next time you feel smug about your talent, remember this: you will not be successful without the help of the people who are rooting for you and helping you succeed. Do not alienate your biggest supporters.
