Mid-March, and the blackthorn is beginning to show white along the hedgerows. It puts one in mind of Edward Thomas — a poet who noticed these things before anyone else thought to write them down.

\"The flowers left thick at nightfall in the wood
This Eastertide call into mind the men,
Now far from home, who, with their sweethearts, should
Have gathered them and will do never again.\"

Written in 1915, knowing what was coming. Thomas had an extraordinary gift for making the English countryside feel both eternal and heartbreakingly fragile — all in four lines. He teaches us that the simplest observation, honestly made, can carry more weight than any amount of grand rhetoric.
