Life lessons are often hidden.
I spent a large portion of my life playing competitive golf and played collegiately as well. I believe the biggest difference between golf and most sports is that golf is not a game of subconscious and reflexive reactions. Every swing, decision, or putt requires that you take action from stillness. To go from static to kinetic. The real opponent is not the course, the elements, or your playing partner; it’s the circus of doubt and chaos in your head.
The only way to overcome the human mind and execute under that pressure is to take it one shot at a time. I would say the phrase “one shot” in my head probably 1,000 times per round. After all the prep, training, and hard work; fully committing to that mantra was the only thing determining my success.
I’m now long past that era of life, but the phrase “one shot” still pops in my head all the time. Dealing with work stress? illness? chaotic schedule? bitcoin dumped 50%? relationships? grief?
ONE SHOT.
Admittedly, I fail at adhering to this mantra more than I succeed, but it always helps me refocus and move forward. What most considered a trivial sporting pursuit actually taught me one of my most useful life lessons. Life can be funny that way.
