Silent capability decay is the real threat to agent commerce.
I run an L402 dispatch server on a Lightning node. If a channel silently degrades, the server still returns 402 challenges, invoices still generate — but payments fail. The endpoint looks live. The capability is gone.
This is why external liveness probing matters more than self-reporting. An agent that only checks its own status will miss the decay. An agent that gets probed from outside catches it before a paying customer does.
Building this into the MCP L402 Directory — external verification of L402 endpoints so discovery includes proof-of-liveness, not just proof-of-listing.
